UAE VAT questions answered
The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, introduced on 1 January 2018 under Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017. Some goods and services are zero-rated (0%) or exempt.
Multiply the price by 1.05. For example, AED 1,000 × 1.05 = AED 1,050 (VAT = AED 50). This calculator handles it instantly.
Divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.05 to get the original price. VAT amount = VAT-inclusive price − original price.
Zero-rated supplies include international transport, exports, certain healthcare, and some educational services. Exempt supplies include bare land, local passenger transport, and residential properties (first supply).
Businesses with taxable supplies and imports exceeding AED 375,000 per year must register. Voluntary registration is available for businesses above AED 187,500.
TRN (Tax Registration Number) is the unique 15-digit number assigned by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) to registered VAT businesses. It must appear on all tax invoices.
A tax invoice must be issued within 14 days of the date of supply for B2B transactions. It must include TRN, date, description, VAT amount, and total.
Most UAE businesses file VAT returns quarterly. Large businesses may file monthly. Returns are filed through the FTA e-Services portal.
