Hijri calendar questions answered
The Hijri calendar (Islamic calendar) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 lunar months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used for Islamic religious observances — Ramadan, Hajj, Eid — and for official documents in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and other Muslim-majority countries.
A Hijri year is 354 or 355 days — approximately 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. This is why Islamic events like Ramadan shift approximately 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
The 12 Hijri months are: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qidah, and Dhu al-Hijjah.
UAE government documents including Emirates ID, birth certificates, and some contracts show both Gregorian and Hijri dates. Hijri dates are also used in court documents and notary certificates.
The calendar calculation is standard, but the start of each month is officially determined by moon sighting — which can vary by 1 day between countries. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar is the most widely used reference.
The current Hijri year is 1446 AH (Anno Hegirae). The Hijri calendar started from the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year and one of the four sacred months. The 10th of Muharram (Ashura) is observed with fasting by Sunni Muslims and as a day of mourning by Shia Muslims.
