FAQ

GST questions answered

How do I add GST to a price?

To add GST, multiply the original amount by (1 + GST rate/100). For 18% GST: Price × 1.18 = GST-inclusive price. This calculator does it instantly — just enter the amount and select the GST slab.

How do I remove GST from a price?

To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price (reverse GST), divide by (1 + GST rate/100). For 18%: GST-inclusive price ÷ 1.18 = original price. The difference is the GST amount.

What are the GST slabs in India?

India has four main GST slabs: 5% (essential goods and services), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most manufactured goods and services), and 28% (luxury and sin goods). There is also a 0% slab for exempt items.

What is CGST and SGST?

For transactions within a state (intra-state), GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For example, 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. The total rate paid by the buyer is the same.

What is IGST?

Integrated GST (IGST) applies to inter-state transactions (supplier and buyer in different states) and imports. The full GST rate is charged as IGST instead of being split into CGST and SGST.

Can I claim input tax credit on GST?

Yes. Registered GST businesses can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on GST paid on purchases, reducing the GST payable on sales. ITC is only available when the supplier has also filed and paid their GST.

What goods are exempt from GST?

Items like unprocessed food grains, fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, salt, and certain healthcare and educational services are exempt from GST or fall under the 0% category.

Do I need to register for GST?

Businesses with annual turnover above INR 40 lakh (INR 20 lakh for services, INR 10 lakh for special category states) must register for GST. Voluntary registration is also allowed.
